On August 18th, the Lumos Theater Festival successfully held a Playback Theater workshop in Hangzhou.
In this unique form of improvisational performance called Playback Theater, audience members' stories were brought to life on stage. The actors used their skills and creativity to deliver moments of emotion and joy. We thank every participant and audience member for their enthusiastic interaction, which filled this event with warmth and resonance.
Opening of the Event
At the beginning of the event, workshop instructor Teacher Tong provided a detailed explanation of the format of Playback Theatre and conducted an in-depth analysis of the similarities and differences between improvisational performance and traditional theatre. His witty and humorous presentation not only gave everyone a new understanding of improvisational theatre but also set a relaxed and enjoyable tone for the activities that followed.
Demonstration
In key segments, Teacher Tong will personally demonstrate, perfectly showcasing the essence of improvisation through his performance. His precise acting and full emotional expression left a deep impression on us.
Shedding the "Social Self"
To create a better "theatrical atmosphere," we followed Teacher Tong's guidance to shed our "social selves" and better immerse ourselves in our roles, revealing genuine inner emotions.
Notably, we also had two students from Xi'an and their mentor who made the effort to travel to Hangzhou to join our flashback theater workshop, enriching the activity even further.
Finding a Partner
During the workshop, we also practiced a partnered improvisation exercise, as shown in the image of two Lumos creators performing together. This segment helped everyone improve their collaboration and rapport, laying the foundation for subsequent improvisation performances.
Showtime
In the final impromptu performance, two participants shared two touching stories:
▏One participant expressed regret about not being able to express familial love in time
▏Another recalled the excitement of watching their idol's concert when they were young
Through the heartfelt performances of the "navigator" and actors, scenes from the past seem to reappear before our eyes. When witnesses see themselves portrayed in the drama and reflect on the present, they can't help but release deep-seated emotions, experiencing a sense of healing.
Accompanied by our laughter and tears of emotion, the flashback theater workshop came to a successful conclusion.
